THE PROBLEM
Within the past few years, many of my friends have begun to use smart lighting devices and when looking at the market as a whole, this appears to be a growing trend. In 2019, the comfort and lighting segment of smart homes amounted to nearly $6 billion in revenue with a projected annual growth rate of 26.6% (Statista).
The projected increases in household adoption rate and average revenue imply that demand for smart lighting devices is expected to grow. With that, a supply of new smart lighting devices will keep pace, bringing new options to consumers across all price segments and introducing a host of new smart lighting apps.
Many of the current smart lighting apps lack any cross-brand interactivity, meaning some users are downloading upwards of three to four apps just to control their lights. Additionally, these apps lack many essential functions such as combined color temperature and brightness automation, wake-up/sleep lighting schedules, and detailed lighting energy consumption metrics.
